Pike Place Chowder, Honorable Mention

This place deserves a severe honorable mention when it comes to New England chowder. I would almost rate it a tie to Il Pinata's chowder except that it might have a little too much bacon in it to get the tie. It still has a better chowder tho than anywhere else I've been.

 

Costco went with "Ivars" chowder in their stores but they picked the wrong one. This should have been their choice.

 

This place always has 8 different chowders to partake of along with their award winning New England Chowder.

 

I would rate this 1st. in chowder restaurants because the place is dedicated to chowder. (Il Pirata in Santa Cruz is a seafood/italian restaurant with a chowder for their soup choice)

 

I also think this qualifies as a restaurant that Guy Fieri of Triple D should feature. (Diners, Drive-ins and Dives show on the Food Network

The Best New England Clam Chowder on the West Coast.

My wife and I have this quirky little thing we do when we travel, especially when we are in a coastal region. We like to try the clam chowders at all the restaurants we visit. We'll even walk down a wharf and ask each restaurant for a taste of their chowder before we decide which restaurant to eat at. (ok, I said it was quirky : )

We recently came across what we feel is hands down the best clam chowder anywhere. It's found at a quaint, little restaurant right on the beach in Capitola, Ca. named IL Pirata. (translated "The Pirate", also Capitola is about 3 miles south of Santa Cruz, Ca.) Maybe it was the friendly, hands on service by the owners, Justin and Nicole, (pictured above) or sitting just 50 yards from the waves lapping on the beach that made it taste so good, no matter though, to us they have the creamiest, heartiest and most satisfying, well balanced Chowder this side of the Pacific Rim.
